An Animated Walk-through is very helpful to create when you want to convey a sense of space or explain the circulation of a design to a client or audience.
They also come in handy if you have a digital portfolio (like a personal site) or if you’re selling 3D models online and would like to show off a creation.
Basically knowing how to create a Walk-through video is a very handy skill to acquire because there are so many creative ways to use them.

The 3D model used in this video is quite a large showroom that I designed for a client. It’s around 300 sqm of floor space; the perfect size to make a walkthrough so the client can get an idea of the layout and circulation.
The first step in the process of creating an animated walkthrough is to map out the circulation; where you will start and where you’ll end the animation.
In this design, the interior and the items in the showroom will be guiding the client to start from the left and circulate counter-clockwise to view the furniture and then be met with the custom design corner on one side, the reception/checkout counter on the other, and the exit to the mall.
So I’ll start by the entrance doors and end my animation somewhere around it, too.
So, naturally I want to angle my camera to view that corner, so I’ll start with the camera setup first.
Creating a Walkthrough Animation relies on a Sketchup feature called Scenes; they are basically camera views that you can set anywhere inside or outside your model.
You can save these scenes and go back to them to export the view as an image or to render that view via a render plugin like VRay.
An animation is a series of scenes exported as a video straight through Sketchup or rendered as frames (which are basically images) and then combined in a video editing app to create a rendered walkthrough video.
